About Smart and Skilled

A traineeship and apprenticeship is a job combined with structured training. Studying through SSBT with self-paced learning materials allows minimum disruption to the workplace. SSBT is able to accept enrolment applications into traineeship and apprenticeship courses all year round.

Traineeship and apprenticeships may be offered to:

Smart and Skilled qualifications are subsidised by the NSW Government. Eligible students can choose from the qualifications, from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma.

Smart and Skilled training covers apprenticeships and most new-entrant traineeships, although it excludes VET courses in schools.

If you’re eligible for government-subsidised training under Smart and Skilled, you pay only a portion of the training cost.



You may be eligible for Smart and Skilled funding if you:

  • are aged 15 years or older
  • have left school
  • live or work in New South Wales
  • are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or  New Zealand citizen
