Multicultural Australia

Recognising different cultures, traditions, and religions—but shared values—is all part of Australia’s multicultural policy. Anyone living in Australia has the right to practise and share their cultural traditions and languages legally, free from discrimination.

Almost 25% of us here were born overseas, and 4 million Australians speak a language other than English: so if you do, welcome.

Australian culture is quite diverse… multicultural and multiracial, particularly in the cities. This is reflected in the rich variety of cuisines, languages, lifestyles, and cultural practices.

With people from so many ethnic, linguistic and religious backgrounds, you will find a church, mosque, synagogue or community space for you…

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have inhabited Australia for tens of thousands of years. Yet most Australians are either immigrants or the descendants of immigrants who arrived over the last two centuries from more than 200 countries.

In recent times, threats to social harmony and security have emerged. A 2017 terrorist attack that stirred the hearts of Sydneysiders was met with an outpouring of sympathy and solidarity rather than simply fear.  The Australian Government responds to these challenges by encouraging continuing dialogue with a wide range of community groups.
