LIFE IN AUSTRALIA

Work While Studying

First, understand what your student visa entitles you to do or not do. You cannot work until you have commenced your course in Australia. Once your course has commenced you are permitted to work a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight when your course is in session, and unlimited hours when your course is out of session.

Work that is formally registered as part of your course (a placement) is not included in the 40 hours per fortnight limitation. Unpaid voluntary work is normally excluded from this limit as well. (Conditions apply: see above website) A working holiday visa – if you obtain one – allows you to work for up to six months’ maximum for any one employer.

Tax File Number

You must obtain a Tax File Number to be able to work in Australia. This is available at no cost from the Australian Tax Office.
